Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the right to contest specific decisions from the chair umpire, following the practice already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
