Each time a major honors show draws close, there’s always a clamor for the addition fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely during that awards season
- Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
- Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often small games, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for many years.
The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
